In plain language
When you click a product link on this site and buy something, Amazon pays us a small percentage of the sale. It costs you nothing extra — the price you pay is the same as if you had gone to Amazon directly. That commission is the only income this site has.
Which links earn us money
Product links — the "Check price on Amazon" buttons, and product names in the picks tables and cards. Those are marked #ad where they appear, carry rel="sponsored nofollow" in the page source, and route through a resolver on this domain before going to Amazon.
Links that earn us nothing, and are not marked: every citation to a manufacturer specification page, every link to a standards body, and every link to a manufacturer's own store. Those are references, and we include them specifically so you can check our figures and compare prices somewhere we do not profit from.
The tracking ID we use
This site's Amazon Associates tracking ID is mmg-jacktorque-20. You can see it in the URL of any product link after the redirect completes. If you ever find an Amazon link on this site carrying a different tag, that is a bug and we would like to hear about it.
What commission does not change
- Which product we put first. Rankings come from the published scoring rubric at how we review, not from commission rates. Amazon's rates vary by category, not meaningfully by product within a category, so there is very little to be gained by gaming this even if we wanted to.
- Whether we mention a product that is not on Amazon. Where a tool is better bought direct from the manufacturer, we say so and link there.
- What we say about a product's weaknesses. Every pick on this site carries a "what you give up" list, because a recommendation without one is advertising.
Why there are no prices here
This site has no live price feed, so rather than printing a figure that goes stale we link to the current Amazon listing. You see today's price at the moment you click, not one we recorded weeks ago.
That also means we make no deal, discount or savings claims anywhere, because we cannot verify any of them. If you see a price on this site, it is an error.
Other affiliate programs
At launch, Amazon is the only affiliate program this site participates in. We build no tracking links for programs we have not joined, even where a manufacturer runs one publicly — an untracked link that earns nothing is honest, and a tracking link for an unjoined program is broken.
If that changes, this page will name the program before any link to it goes live.
Why this page exists
US Federal Trade Commission guidance requires that material connections between a publisher and the products it recommends be disclosed clearly and conspicuously. We take "conspicuously" to mean: at the top of every page that carries product links, not buried in a footer — which is why you will see a short disclosure above the first affiliate link on every commercial page, as well as this one.
